Air NORTH FROM THE MAGAZINE
|
Air NORTH was founded in 1960 by staff members of Newcastle Airport, and today, as then, we aim to record the history of the region's three Airports, together with coverage of other local events and such news as affects the North and North-East of England. In the past, our society has often been regarded as a group for the Aircraft Spotter, however, we also cover other interests connected with aviation including photography, airband listening, airshow trips and lectures, plus aircraft factory and military airbase tours.
Our members receive an informative monthly magazine which is full of information regarding local aviation. Newcastle, Teesside and Carlisle airports have their own sections, detailing unusual/important visitors, airlines and airliner information, military and civilian crew-training missions, and news of forthcoming events. Further sections of the magazine are devoted to both regional high and low-level overflights, with news of the aircraft using the lower and upper airways in the North-East. The regions smaller airfields and landing strips feature too, with news of local fly-ins and airshows. A comprehensive military section is included, not only recording past events but giving dates of future deployments and airshows. Further developments over the last few years have included the inclusion of members articles, covering a diverse range of subjects, and the inclusion of black and white photographs inside, and the introduction of a colour cover in 2000. Last but not least, we also publish articles dealing with historical and contemporary aviation events, plus travelogues from those of our members who travel abroad in search of aircraft. Finally news of forthcoming meetings, base tours and airshow trips is included.

Social meetings are held in a convenient location close to Newcastle International Airport, with themes on a variety of aviation topics. Recent subjects have included Newcastle Airport Air Traffic Control, the Army Air Corps, aviation in South America, Aeroflot operations in eastern Siberia, No.1 Flying Training School and No.202 Squadron, RAF.
Other benefits of Air NORTH membership include free membership to the North East Aircraft Museum at Sunderland, and a 10% discount on purchases from the Aviation Hobby Shop at West Drayton, near Heathrow. Both are available on production of a current membership card. Air NORTH is a totally voluntary organisation. Any profits from our activities are ploughed back into the society for the benefit of members, for instance to ensure subscription fees are kept as low as possible, and to purchase new equipment to maintain and improve the magazine's high standards. We are accountable to our members, and hold an Annual General Meeting each March to elect persons onto the committee and to formulate policy for the coming year. To summarise, Air NORTH gives local aviation enthusiasts contact with and access to information regarding local and national aviation, through its magazine, trips and meetings. No other organisation provides this in the North-East. |
